Dürer's Rhino

Albrecht Dürer (1471-1578) heard about this strange beast from a colleague who had seen it in Lisbon. (The Indian rhino arrived in Lisbon as a gift from Sultan Muzafar II, ruler of the kingdom of Gujarat given to the governor of Portuguese India.)

Dürer never actually saw the Lisbon rhino or any other rhino, nevertheless his 1515 woodcut was used as a standard rhinoceros image well into the 20th century.
